Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen to Step Down After 18 Years; Will Continue as Board Chairman

Indian-origin technology leader Shantanu Narayen has decided to step down as the Chief Executive Officer of Adobe after serving in the role for 18 years. The company officially announced the decision, stating that Narayen will continue as CEO until a new leader is appointed and will remain as the chairman of Adobe’s board.

Adobe, one of the world’s leading software companies, is headquartered in San Jose in the US state of California. The 62-year-old Narayen has played a significant role in transforming the company into a global technology powerhouse.

Adobe became globally recognized through its popular design software such as Adobe Photoshop, which has long been a key tool in the design and creative industry. However, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technology has recently created new competition in the design software market, challenging traditional software models.

Shantanu Narayen, who hails from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, is considered one of the most influential Indian-origin CEOs in the global technology sector. Since taking over as CEO in late 2007, he transformed Adobe from a traditional software vendor into a major force in cloud computing and AI-powered digital services.

In response to the growing competition driven by artificial intelligence tools, Adobe has been strengthening its AI strategy. The company has been expanding partnerships and acquiring competing companies to integrate advanced technologies into its platform and maintain its leadership in the creative software industry.

Despite the company continuing to report growth in revenue and profits, the rise of AI-driven design tools has raised concerns about Adobe’s long-term growth potential. Narayen’s decision to step down has also created uncertainty among investors.

Following the announcement, Adobe’s stock price reportedly fell by more than 7 percent. The company’s shares have declined by around 22 percent this year and about 21 percent in 2025. Over the past 15 months, Adobe’s stock has dropped by nearly 43 percent, reflecting investor concerns about the company’s future in the rapidly evolving AI-driven technology landscape.

In a message to employees about his decision, Narayen said that when he took charge, Adobe had around 7,000 employees. Today, the company employs more than 30,000 people worldwide. He also highlighted that the company’s revenue has grown nearly sixfold during his leadership, reaching around $25 billion (approximately ₹2 lakh crore).

Narayen expressed pride in the achievements of the company and its employees, stating that this is the right time to pass leadership to a new generation of leaders. He confirmed that he will support the next CEO while continuing to serve as the chairman of Adobe’s board.
