Women Protest in Coimbatore Over Drinking Water Shortage

A group of women staged a road blockade in Coimbatore on Saturday demanding the immediate supply of drinking water to their locality.

Drinking water is supplied to Coimbatore city through Siruvani, Pillur I, Pillur II and the Vadavalli–Goundampalayam Combined Water Supply Schemes. However, residents of Sengadu area in Pappanaickenpalayam, which falls under Ward No. 49 of the Coimbatore Corporation, have reportedly been facing severe hardship due to the non-supply of drinking water for the past one month.

Despite repeated complaints to the local ward councillor and officials of the Coimbatore Corporation, no action was taken, residents alleged.

Angered by the continued inaction, women from the area suddenly blocked the Government Women’s Polytechnic Road on Saturday by placing empty water pots on the road. The protest caused heavy traffic congestion in the locality.

Following this, police and corporation officials rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesters. After officials assured that necessary steps would be taken to restore drinking water supply, the women withdrew their protest.
