Koniamman Temple Chariot Festival Celebrated Grandly in Coimbatore
The famous Koniamman Temple chariot festival in Coimbatore is being celebrated with great devotion. Thousands of devotees participated in the grand chariot procession and special rituals.
The grand chariot festival of the Koniamman Temple, the guardian deity of Coimbatore, is being celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. Special pujas were conducted every day during the festival, and a large number of devotees participated and offered prayers to Goddess Koniamman.
On Wednesday, the sacred Thirukalyanam (divine wedding ceremony) of the goddess was performed. Hundreds of devotees gathered at the temple to witness the auspicious ritual and seek blessings.
The highlight of the festival, the grand chariot procession (Therottam), is taking place today. On this occasion, the idol of Utsavar Koniamman was decorated with special ornaments early in the morning. The beautifully adorned goddess was then taken in a palanquin through the Raja Street and brought to the chariot stand.
Amid the chanting of Vedic hymns, the decorated chariot carried the idol of the goddess. The chariot procession began around 2:05 PM, marking the most important moment of the festival.
Thousands of devotees enthusiastically pulled the chariot ropes while chanting “Om Sakthi… Parasakthi”, praising the goddess. Devotees lined up on both sides of the streets to witness the procession and seek blessings.
Some devotees also offered prayers by sprinkling salt and pepper near the chariot wheels, a traditional ritual believed to remove obstacles and fulfill wishes.
The chariot is scheduled to pass through Oppanakara Street and Periya Kadai Street before returning to its final resting point.
Extensive security arrangements have been made for the festival. More than 2,000 police personnel, along with several volunteers, have been deployed to ensure safety and manage the large crowd of devotees.
