Smartphones Emerge as India’s Top Export in 2025 with $30 Billion Milestone

India’s smartphone exports reached $30 billion in 2025, making smartphones the country’s top export item, according to Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

In a social media post, the minister stated that India is rapidly emerging as a major global hub for smartphone manufacturing, catering to the growing demand from countries around the world.

During the financial year 2024–25 alone, mobile phones worth $60 billion were manufactured in India, out of which approximately $22 billion were exported. Overall electronics exports in 2025 crossed $44 billion, marking significant growth.

The government also announced that four new semiconductor plants are expected to become operational this year, which is likely to further accelerate production and exports in the coming years.

Apple’s Key Role in Export Growth

A major driver behind this export surge has been Apple’s expansion of manufacturing operations in India. Following higher tariffs imposed by the United States on Chinese goods, Apple significantly scaled up its production in India, contributing substantially to export growth.

Market experts note that India’s mobile phone production is nearing 300 million units annually, with one out of every four phones manufactured being exported. High-end smartphones from brands such as Apple, Samsung, and Motorola are being exported in large volumes to the United States and other global markets.

According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), Apple shipped around 5 million iPhones in the Indian market during the third quarter of 2025 alone. Apple continues to dominate the premium (₹53,000–₹71,000) and super-premium smartphone segments, playing a crucial role in driving rapid growth in India’s electronics sector.
