South Africa vs New Zealand: Unbeaten Proteas Face Kiwis in T20 World Cup Semi-Final

The first semi-final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup will feature a high-stakes clash between South Africa national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team on Wednesday (March 4).

The match will be played at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

South Africa’s Dominant Run

South Africa have reached the semi-finals without suffering a single defeat in the tournament so far. The team topped both the league stage and group rounds, emerging as one of the most formidable sides in the competition.

Historically, South Africa had often fallen short in crucial ICC knockout matches. However, the team ended that narrative by winning the ICC World Test Championship title last year.

Under the guidance of coach Shukri Conrad, the Proteas are now aiming to capture an ICC white-ball trophy as well.

Captain Aiden Markram has led the batting unit strongly, supported by players like Quinton de Kock, Dewald Brevis, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and David Miller.

In the bowling department, Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada-like pace options such as Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch, and spinner Keshav Maharaj are expected to challenge the New Zealand batting line-up.

New Zealand’s Campaign

New Zealand have experienced two defeats in the tournament so far, including one against South Africa during the league stage.

Despite that setback, the Kiwis secured their Super 8 spot comfortably and eventually advanced to the semi-finals.

Their batting line-up includes aggressive openers Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, while the middle order features Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mark Chapman, and Daryl Mitchell.

Captain Mitchell Santner, along with Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, and Jacob Duffy, will lead the bowling attack. Ravindra has also impressed with the ball, taking seven wickets in the final two Super 8 matches.

Head-to-Head Record

In T20 internationals, South Africa and New Zealand have faced each other 19 times. South Africa lead the record with 12 victories.

However, New Zealand famously defeated South Africa in the semi-final of the 2015 Cricket World Cup, a match still remembered by cricket fans.

Pitch and Match Details

The pitch at Eden Gardens is expected to favor batsmen, with an average score around 180 runs. Fast bowlers have historically taken more wickets at this venue.
