Technical Lecture on Climate Change & Water Security Held in Coimbatore on World Water Day 2026
The Institution of Engineers (India) Coimbatore Local Centre organized a lecture on climate change and water security at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University on World Water Day 2026.
On the occasion of World Water Day 2026, themed “Water and Gender,” The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre, in association with the Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute (AEC&RI), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, organized a technical lecture on “Climate Change and Water Security” on March 23, 2026.
The session featured Dr. S. Manivannan, Principal Scientist at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Assam, as the guest speaker. The event began with a welcome address by Dr. M. Senthilkumar, Chairman of IEI Coimbatore Local Centre. Felicitations were delivered by Dr. P. Rajkumar, Dean of AEC&RI, and Dr. K. Mahendran, Director of the Centre for Water and Geospatial Studies at TNAU.

Dr. T. Senthilkumar, Committee Member of IEI Coimbatore Local Centre, introduced the chief guest. In his lecture, Dr. Manivannan emphasized the growing pressure on water resources caused by population growth, industrialization, and agriculture. He explained the effects of climate change on rainfall, temperature, and hydrological cycles, highlighting issues such as reduced runoff, increased evapotranspiration, and soil moisture loss.
The speaker also addressed extreme weather events like floods and droughts, and introduced the concept of Water Use Efficiency (WUE) in agriculture. He stressed the importance of integrating WUE with climate-resilient strategies and discussed climate-smart agriculture practices, including precision water management. Practical solutions such as water harvesting and groundwater recharge methods were also presented.
The session concluded with a call for sustainable and integrated water resource management. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. J. Pradeep Kumar, Honorary Secretary of IEI Coimbatore Local Centre.
