Major Transport Reforms Needed to Achieve India’s Net-Zero Emissions Target by 2070: NITI Aayog

NITI Aayog, in its latest report, has emphasized that major transformations in the transport sector are essential for India to achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2070.

The report recommends gradually reducing the use of diesel vehicles, which are harmful to the environment, and accelerating the adoption of cleaner alternatives such as CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles.

Currently, petrol usage stands at 76 percent, which is projected to decline to 29 percent by 2070. Meanwhile, electricity usage is expected to rise to 45 percent, and biofuel consumption is projected to reach 20 percent. The use of gas and hydrogen is also targeted to increase significantly, potentially by up to 90 percent.

To meet these goals, the government plans to tighten Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) standards and phase out older commercial vehicles. Additionally, NITI Aayog has recommended modernizing and expanding public transportation systems, including buses and railways, to promote sustainable mobility and reduce emissions.
