Neighbouring Countries Seek Fuel Support from India Amid Global Shortage
Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Maldives have sought fuel assistance from India as global shortages intensify following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the Iran conflict.
Several neighbouring countries including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Maldives have requested fuel assistance from India amid growing global shortages.
The situation has worsened after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz due to the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Since nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, the closure has created major disruptions in the global energy market.
The impact is being felt across many countries, leading to fuel shortages and rising crude oil prices worldwide. In India as well, the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has already been reduced to manage domestic demand.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that several neighbouring countries have approached India seeking support in fuel supply.
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, Bangladesh has specifically requested diesel supplies, and the government will take a decision after assessing India’s domestic fuel demand and production levels.
Officials stated that India will ensure that domestic energy needs remain secure before considering fuel exports to neighbouring countries.
Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict has pushed global crude oil prices to around $110 per barrel, further intensifying concerns over energy security in the region.
