Tamil Nadu Announces ₹2 Electricity Subsidy for Restaurants Amid LPG Cylinder Shortage

Amid the ongoing shortage of LPG cylinders in the country, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a special electricity subsidy for restaurants and tea shops across the state.

Radhakrishnan stated that food establishments using electric stoves instead of LPG will receive an electricity subsidy of ₹2 per unit. The measure aims to compensate businesses that have shifted from gas-based cooking to electric appliances due to the current gas supply shortage.

The decision was taken after a high-level review meeting regarding LPG demand and availability in Tamil Nadu. Officials held discussions with M. K. Stalin before announcing the relief measures.

Addressing the media at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in Chennai, officials said the subsidy will continue as long as the commercial LPG cylinder restrictions announced by the Central Government remain in place.

Authorities clarified that restaurants will not be questioned or investigated for increased electricity usage resulting from the shift to electric cooking appliances.

In addition, medium-scale industries will be eligible for financial assistance to purchase electric equipment. The government will provide loans with a 25 percent subsidy, up to a maximum of ₹3.05 lakh, to support businesses transitioning to alternative energy solutions.

The state government has also permitted industries to temporarily use alternative fuels without prior approval from the Pollution Control Board. Around 60,698 factories across the state will benefit from this relaxation.

To further address the fuel shortage situation, the government has ordered the supply of an additional 3,228 kilolitres of kerosene through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Officials also confirmed that farmers will continue to sell vegetables without interruption in 194 Uzhavar Sandhai markets across the state.

The measures are aimed at ensuring that essential services, food businesses, and industries continue to operate smoothly despite the LPG supply disruptions.
