T20 World Cup 2026: Intense Semi-Final Race in Group 2 – New Zealand or Pakistan?

The race for the semi-finals from Group 2 in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has intensified, with fans eagerly awaiting the final outcome.

South Africa from Group 1 and England from Group 2 have already secured their semi-final berths. England face New Zealand today at the Premadasa Stadium in a crucial encounter.

If New Zealand win this match, they will qualify for the semi-finals with five points. Even if New Zealand lose narrowly, they are still likely to progress due to their superior net run rate of +3.050 compared to Pakistan’s -0.461.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will face Sri Lanka tomorrow in Pallekele. Pakistan must secure a massive victory to have any realistic chance of qualifying. A narrow win will not be enough unless New Zealand suffer a heavy defeat against England.

At present, New Zealand appear to have the upper hand in the qualification race due to their strong net run rate advantage.

Can Pakistan Pull Off a Big Win?

Pakistan’s path to the semi-finals depends on two factors — a heavy defeat for New Zealand and a dominant victory over Sri Lanka.

However, Pakistan’s batting form in the tournament has been inconsistent. Apart from Shaibzada Farhan, who has scored 283 runs and is among the top run-getters of the tournament, other batters have struggled. Shadab Khan (111 runs) has provided some support, while Usman Khan has contributed occasionally.

Captain Salman Ali Agha (44 runs), Saim Ayub (70 runs), and Babar Azam (91 runs) have failed to produce consistent performances, which has hurt Pakistan’s campaign. Fakhar Zaman, who was not part of the playing XI in the group stage, has been included in the Super 8 round and has shown some promise.

On the bowling front, Usman Tariq has been impressive with 10 wickets so far in the tournament. Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled well against England in the Super 8 stage, and Pakistan’s spin attack has also provided some encouragement.

Although Sri Lanka have struggled in recent matches, Pakistan will need an exceptional performance to keep their semi-final hopes alive. As it stands, New Zealand remain favourites to secure the second semi-final spot from Group 2.
