Solar energy stocks declined sharply after the United States imposed a 126% tariff on solar cells and modules imported from India. The move significantly impacted renewable energy companies and triggered a sell-off in solar sector stocks.
Following the tariff announcement, shares of Waaree Energies dropped over 14.6% and Premier Energies fell more than 12% during Wednesday morning trade (February 25). Meanwhile, Borosil Renewables slipped 1.5% and Vikram Solar declined around 7%.
The US government stated that the tariff was introduced to support domestic manufacturers. Apart from India, duties ranging from 86% to 143% were imposed on Indonesia, while Laos faced tariffs of up to 81%.
In the first half of 2025, India, Indonesia, and Laos together accounted for 57% of the total solar imports into the United States. In 2024 alone, solar imports from India were valued at $792.6 million — nearly nine times higher than in 2022.
The tariff decision is expected to affect export-driven solar companies and may reshape global renewable energy trade dynamics in the coming months.
