Student Admissions Begin in Tamil Nadu Government Schools for Academic Year 2026–27

Student admissions for the 2026–27 academic year in government schools across Tamil Nadu have officially commenced.

Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi inaugurated the enrollment drive at a government-aided school in Saidapet, Chennai, by admitting students into Class 1. He also distributed welfare kits to newly enrolled children.

Early Admission Initiative

Under the Tamil Nadu School Education Department, 37,554 government schools are currently functioning across the state, with nearly 52 lakh students enrolled.

Traditionally, admissions in government schools begin in June after the summer vacation. However, since 2024, the state government has initiated early admissions in March to increase student enrollment.

Following this initiative, admissions for the upcoming academic year began on Monday.

Statewide Enrollment Drive

Officials stated that similar admission drives were conducted across various districts, including Coimbatore, Madurai, and Tiruchirappalli, where hundreds of children were newly registered.

Efforts are also underway to enroll over 5 lakh children this year. Special focus is being given to children above five years of age who have completed pre-school education at Anganwadi centers, ensuring their admission into nearby government schools.

Officials Present

The event was attended by School Education Secretary P. Chandra Mohan, Director S. Kannappan, and Elementary Education Director Poo. Aa. Naresh, among other officials.

The early admission initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening public education and increasing access to quality schooling across Tamil Nadu.
